Faina Rapoport
"She carried a mental portrait of New York City..."
Wife of Yuriy. Mother of Alex & Elena.
Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Two of the many images from Faina Rapoport's mental portrait of New York City. She carried these with her for years in hopes that she and her family could escape religious persecution by moving to the United States.
Faina and her family finally received refugee status in 1994, and moved from Moscow, Russia to New York. Settling in Brighton Beach near Coney Island, Faina Rapoport studied English and eventually got a job as a computer programmer at Accenture at the World Trade Center.
Faina was working in WTC Tower One, between floors 93-100 on September 11th, 2001.
She was 45 years old.
"I know my mother is still happy about coming to America. She accomplished things that she never would have been able to do in Russia."
~Elena Rapoport, daughter
But I know, that like 2995 others, she has family and friends
who love her and miss her very much.
I'm proud to be able to pay tribute to her.

Wow. Great tribute but such a shame that after all the fighting she had to do to give her a family a better life, that this should happen.

Such amazing people, come here and master English to do computer programming. What marvelous things they could have accomplished but for that horrible day.
Thanks for visiting me.

I've seen so many nice tributes through this amazing and wonderful project, but honestly, yours is one of the most beautiful. While Faina Rapoport's story isn't as long as some, just the information that you were able to find is truly just as amazing and moving as anyone's story. Her story reminds me of the best parts about America, and your beautiful telling of her story makes Faina Rapoport so real. Gosh, what an amazing story - from refugee to a computer programmer... Thank you for putting a real person behind one of those mind-boggling numbers of people we lost that day. I will remember her and her family. Thank you.
I love the pictures and colors, too - really, just so tasteful and beautiful.

This tribut is wonderful. I love the time you took on the graphics and how, even though you had little information on her, you still made her human for us.

In some ways, I am most moved by the people for whom we have little information. In our technocentric society, it is as if they never existed ... if you can't Google someone, are they real?
But we know they are real; we know they lived and loved; we know they are mourned and missed.
Thank you...

Very well spoken. Let this stand as a "little more information" on Faina for those who wish to remember and know the loss that we all suffered on 9/11.

I said the same last year (scroll way down), but this truly is one of the most beautiful tributes, and it has stuck with me and made me want to honor someone this year as well, so I did.
It is good to read about these people - such fine people - that we lost that day.
I will never forget.
Again, I am back to read Faina's story. Your tribute still touches my heart, already 7 years later.
I have recently visited NYC for a couple of days and went to the 9/11 museum and the memorial. I found Faina's name and was smashed by the fact that she was carrying the same family name as mine, Rapoport.
I never knew her before but I feel now that we are close relatives. And maybe we are. Who knows.
Thanks to the tribute, she will be remembered
